about
“That Deadly Sound” was recorded at The Track House in Nashville, TN, with production, engineering, and mixing done by Keller Moore. Music written by Andrew Kirell, lyrics by Kirell and Hank Compton.
The song was inspired by several of the stories I'd covered during my reporting career in which the warning signs for suicidal individuals were repeatedly ignored by the communities designed to support them. In these cases, it was too late by the time anyone had understood what was happening to their loved ones, and all they could do was reflect upon what they hadn't seen before.
lyrics
I was born and raised by the code
That you don't ever want to know
And if you know, you don't want to tell
You just live in a private hell
My dad, he raised me with a heart of stone
Left my mom to do it all alone
He'd come home in the middle of night
Another knock-down, drag-out fight
My father was raised by a man who's like
The one that his mirror sees
Always wounded, never free
From the lack of company
No one ever saw a tear from his eye
He kept his sadness to the night
Until his sadness turned to cries
On the night that he wished to die
That deadly sound
Like a shotgun in the night
Like a train come from out of sight
You can't hear that deadly sound
Lisa was always a rolling stone
Til the voices in her head took hold
They said, "Pray, it'll go away,"
But you know it never ends that way
She drove downtown and crashed in a rail
They shot her down as she pleaded for help
She rant and raved with her baby in tow
What was wrong, we will never know
That deadly sound
Like a shotgun in the night
Like a train come from out of sight
You can't hear that deadly sound
